Gingivitis can usually be reversed when proper plaque control is practiced. This includes daily brushing and flossing and professional cleanings at least twice a year. Brushing and flossing reduce the bacterial plaque from the surfaces of the teeth that can be reached and from in between the teeth and under the gum line.
Periodontitis is typically a chronic disease that with proper treatment, good home care/plaque control, and regular periodontal maintenance cleanings (i.e. every 3 months), progression of the disease can usually be controlled.
Other health and lifestyle changes that will decrease the risk, the severity, and the speed of gum disease development include:
- Smoking cessation
- Control of systemic health problems like diabetes
- Stress reduction
- Proper nutrition
